07.09.2003 16:27:10 It looks like one of these beautiful end of summer weekends in Poland. Blue sky, cumulus clouds, 20 something degrees and quite a strong wind. Stephen and I went to Leszno yesterday with a flying intention at least on his part, and there I was hit again by a wave of WGC memories :-) So I thought I would let you know that Leszno airfield is still there, active, friendly and full of people missing the Worlds atmosphere... It was really great to meet some of them and exchange all this mixture of longing and excited hyper-memories. They are all saying hello! From the latest news - Lukasz Wooki, grid Ania and office Magda went local soaring yesterday and Agnieszka Buba completed a silver distance! Well done Buba! Also there was Wiola and Simon Mistur at the grid, which was directed by Marcin Bulanda (whom you will remember from the weighing stations and night flights) and by Andrzej Frackowiak - a whiskered happy marshal. Darek Cisek (Scoring team) did some instructing flights and Robert - the marketing guy, some local soaring. The weather turned out a bit more difficult than expected due to the strong wind and blue sky in places, but still some pilots managed to do about 300 km + tasks. Looks like we have all rested a bit now and are ready to organise another competition! :-) Ania |

02.09.2003 23:11:50 Please, have a look at some more party photos delivered by John Popika. Thanks John! Still waiting for more... Ania |

02.09.2003 16:38:41 The Caption Contest Jury announces - there are 6 equally winning captions. Soon a Leszno Impression story about the results of the Caption Contest. Thanks to all participants. The CC Jury had really hard time deciding. Really really hard, believe us. But we hope the whole contest was big fun for the Participants, the CC Jury and everybody reading the captions. And the winning captions in the alphabetical order are: --"Although the pilot protested that he'd flown through the drop zone, the competition director had doubts" by Chris Davison; --"Engine Lock" by Adrian Sindile; --"New! Fuselage bug wiper" by Craig Reynolds; --"The new tracking system while configuration. Human transmitter as back-pack, telling the accurate position via cellular phone …" by Marcus Frank; --"They think I am so stupid to take this tracking device on board? No way! Let me find it before this thing starts working!!!" by Jurek “Dlugi” Bartoszewicz; --"This must be how PW-5's are conceived" by David Russell. To read all the captions have a look at the Leszno Impression story on the caption contest. |

28.08.2003 13:50:39 We have some more photos for you to see today, mainly supplied by the Belgian team. Thanks and we are waiting for more! A. |
26.08.2003 18:46:47 The CC Jury are still discussing the caption contest and the way to chose winners (see the details about the caption contest on Leszno Impressions). We almost have the winning captions chosen. The decisions are difficult since there were so many funny and witty captions submitted. My heart is already broken that we had to give up most of them. 24.08.2003 13:24:26 I've just added a remarkable collection of Leszno sunsets which got a bit lost among other photos before and I thought it might be a good idea to show them now, while we are waiting for more gliding/ party photos. Which is your favourite senset? Ania |

18.08.2003 23:25:11 I've visited the page on WGC2006 in Uppsala http://www.uppsalafk.com/wgc2006/index.php. What I saw to my amusement was - under the press information there is a link that reads as follows - the Swedish Souring Federation. The question arises - is it a mistake or it is really that sour?;) I've already wrote to the WGC2006 Organisers. And please excuse all my mistakes. Especially the ones that I haven’t spotted yet. E. |

18.08.2003 22:22:06 Why is the Hot News not ticking? No finishers today? No outlandings? E. |

17.08.2003 19:08:11 We have some photos from Kai Monkkonen, Finnland. Look at the photos of THE BAND - the Finnish band that played during the last party on Saturday. They ruled! Still more photos by Kai to come. Ewa |

17.08.2003 15:43:09 If you are interested in the country ratings during the championships, please have a look at Results&Starts where Soaring Team Cup calculations have been placed. Ania |
16.08.2003 20:42:32 And a new Leszno Impression has appeared - all the submitted captions and the stroy about the caption contest. Enjoy the captions. LOL. Ewa |
15.08.2003 14:42:57 And all captions submitted to the caption contest (photo - 29.07, co no 3A). will soon see the daylight. The Caption Contest Jury has some troubles deciding how to chose the top captions and the winners. There are so many good ones. Reading the discription of the Leszno Airfield it's better not to be there now otherwise the post-Leszno blues would be even stronger. Don't you agree Ania? Ewa |
15.08.2003 13:33:41 As reported by the Central Gliding School director, Slawek Kurzawski, Leszno airfield is going through a major tiding up at the moment. The briefing hangar is full of gliders again, which are arriving on trailers from all sorts of places they had been taken to before the comp. The advertising banners are slowly disappearing and until yesterday there wasn't much gliding going on due to the weather conditions. Only 5 training gliders and 3 aeroplanes were flying. There are still some Hungarians at the campsite, whose car engine got broken and they are waiting for parts to arrive. Probably until Tuesday. The airfield itself looks sad and deserted, all the fences are gone, the surface went quite dry and dusty. The town itself has gone into a sleeping mode and people at the arifield are taking long earned holiday time off... A. |
15.08.2003 13:32:50 It's very very windy today, but the sky is full of nice Cu clouds. Maybe some gliding finally? |
15.08.2003 01:30:28 We have prepared a small change on the website by replacing tasks on the main page with Leszno Impressions! Please, enjoy and share your memories with all of us. Good night. Ania |
15.08.2003 00:08:03 The caption contest is closed now. The Jury (Ania, Sarmed and I) has to decide what to do next. For sure you'll be able to read all the captions soon. Most of them has already appeared on the Hot News Ticker. Goodnight. Ewa |

14.08.2003 14:07:08 We have some more photos added to the 10.08. Have a look please. A. |
14.08.2003 10:48:01 It is quite sad and gloomy in Leszno at the moment. After the Championships the nice weather decided to go home as well, so there isn't much glider flying going on at the moment. Only some training flights. Ola (one of the office girls) is doing her Zlin training and having the first solo flight today. Well done Ola! Apart from this there is quite a lot of paper work, financial calculations and other office duties to do which depress non-flying pilots even more... But only until the next flying day comes. Ania |
14.08.2003 10:37:55 Hello. Let me give you the latest statistics for the Worlds: km flown - 654000, hours flown: 9700, number of glider take offs: 2030, tug hours: 134 + 30h on the ground. Quite impressive, isn't it? :-) A. |
14.08.2003 08:10:55 To anybody interested in the caption contest (see the photo with the co no 3A dating from 29.07, 3rd bottom row). Thanks for those who submitted their captions. For those who have't submitted their captions you still have the chance - till 3.00 pm local time. Send your captions to ewahajek@post.pl The results will appear soon. Ewa |

13.08.2003 18:50:57 I'm sitting in front of my computer writing the Daily News and I haven't seen a single glider through my window. How could it be? E. |
13.08.2003 18:01:09 Regarding all the questions asked on 10.08 when we were off-line and busy closing the WGC - I've just put DailyNews 10.08 where you can read about the Closing Ceremony, the awarded and the awards and last moments in Leszno. Ewa |
13.08.2003 17:40:21 Do you know that some people think Ania and I have become WGC-holic? Just gossips? E. |
13.08.2003 16:34:15 Another piece of gossip - did you know that there was only one washing machine at the campsite and to have your washing done you had to sign up on a list smarlty prepared by the pilots 2-3 days in advance?! Otherwise it was free after 1 o'clock at night... A. |
13.08.2003 16:32:27 There are some more photos portaying people involved in the WGC making on the website now. If you have pictures of the ones omitted, please let us know. We'll greatly appreciate being able to show them to everyone :) A. |
13.08.2003 15:23:10 As Ania has written - we still have something more to come, including Daily News 10.08, and some more ideas. If you have photos or any interesting stories that you want to share - do not hesitate and send it to us. Ewa |
13.08.2003 11:33:40 We have started adding photos sent to us by people. Please have a look and if you have any good ones that you would like to show to the world - please send them too. A. |
12.08.2003 23:03:33 Just to let you know before the proper news is written, the World Soaring Trophy went back to New Zealand. Congratulations Kiwis! A. |
12.08.2003 22:33:37 Another gossip story for you from the competition time, told by a Danish spy-in-the-sky. Well, one of the pilots in Std class was spotted following one of the French leaders quite closely ("5 meters behind the tail" as was reported). Each manouver was copied until a rapid one done by the French. The following glider missed it and went below the French. And then the "pee bag" flew out of the window splashing to a great amusement of the spying eye on the glider below. Apparently it wasn't deliberate... :-) Well done too... A. |
12.08.2003 22:27:43 Dear all! Just to let you know that we are working on the site at the moment so that it's better prepared to receive your stories and Imperssions from Leszno. We're expecting to have it ready by Friday. No worries, no old things will get lost. All the best. A. |
12.08.2003 21:58:47 I've just put the photos dating from 10.08. Stay with us since there is still more to come during the week. E. |
12.08.2003 14:11:28 Another few words on what happened in Leszno in the last days. The protests. The evening of the 8th will remain as a Protests evening. We stayed up until probably 1 o'clock sorting things out. There were 3 protests handed in: Canadian Team about Dale Kramer's missing the start line (he used one of the turning points by mistake) and South African + Italian about the Contest Area Boundary. The Goudriaan brothers and Stefano Ghiorzo flew outside the contest area in Task 10. There would be no controversy there if not for the fact, that the third assigned area cylinder of the day was partly outside the contest area. The teams claimed, that in this way the contest area boundary got redefined. Jacek Dankowski pointed out that both at the briefing and on the task sheets it was stated that the airspace outside the contest area boundary is a closed airspace. There was quite a lot of emotions concerning the subject. However, on the evening of the 9th the Jury announced the verdict - all the protests had been rejected... A. |
11.08.2003 23:16:26 Wait for the update on 10.08 and stay with us - there is going to be more. The 28th World Gliding Championships are over but the memories can be shared with others. Ewa |

11.08.2003 19:17:13 Just a few impressions on the past couple of days. The Farewell Party was very succesful, maybe with one exception... The food finished too early, leaving many people quite angry (me included :-). An emergency supply arrived in the end, but some of us had to support Leszno Aeroclub grilled sausages centre by the hangar in the meantime :) The party started off with a humorous quiz prepared by Jurek Kolasinski for all the Team Captains. At the end of it the TC's were awarded with huge champagne bottles which got emptied quickly, I might add. We also had a concert of the Finnish team who surprised everyone with their fantastic musical skills! Then chatting, drinking and dancing continued. Some bad bad girls from the office :), following Rory, got the crowd on the tables with a spectacular dancing show :-0. Some other people ended up in the Finnish sauna at the campsite at 3 o'clock. Quite an experience I've heard from the happy participants! The party continued until... 5 in the morning. We are looking for photos from the party! If anyone has something interesting - please, send it to office@wgc2003.pl We have only few, due to a diligent partying involvement :-). A. |

11.08.2003 15:29:21 Hello everyone. Just a few words of apology for the break in reports. First of all we had a terribly hectic day in the office yesterday closing things down. Plus our internet stopped working :-( Then after 17:30 Meet & Greet went south due to the server overload on our part. Now it looks like the emergencies have been dealt with and things are getting back to normal. Ewa and I are back home in Wroclaw and we'll be working on the lots of material we stil have to show to you. So please stay tuned :-) Also, we will be extending the site by "Leszno Impresssions" so all of you are very welcomed to send us some memories, anegdotes and photos (office@wgc2003.pl) and we'll be putting them on-line. Thank you very much for being with us! Your presence "out there" made our work worthwhile and helped immensly to keep going. Cheers, Ania |

10.08.2003 10:00:00 The Hot News Ticker will be updated. Be patient and come back. :) |
10.08.2003 09:46:49 The Closing Ceremony is to be held in the Sporting Hall in the centre of Leszno at 10.30. Information how to get there was given to the pigeon holes of all countries. It was strongly pointed out not to come with trailers to the parking near the Sporting Hall. We have to hurry. |
10.08.2003 09:30:42 Everydoby's busy with the things that need to be done before the closing - final packing, leaving the flats or hotel rooms, final payments for towings and of course saying goodbye. |
10.08.2003 08:30:26 The last day of the 28th World Gliding Championships means the most busy day for the organizers as well. We do not want to neglect our web page readers, but we won't be able to update the Hot News Ticker immidately. It will be updated though, but first we have to attend the Closing Ceremony and close the Competition Office. |

09.08.2003 14:35:38 It's very very busy here today again... All the teams want to sort out their payments, pack up and leave. We need to prepare good-bye certificates and close up all the subjects. 08.08.2003 22:34:53 Here comes a caption with an interesting story: NOTE: This might not be understood by those who don't know the story. A couple of years ago during a contest in America, Francois Pin landed out with his PW-5. He landed in a field that was occupied by a bull. Francois didn't try to keep the bull away from his glider and the bull proceeded to mount the glider in order to "mate" with it. The bull mounted the glider from the front, with his hooves damaging the wings. I think the canopy was also broken. The caption: "Hey Toro, when you have a beautiful Discus and not the homely Pee Wee, you know which end to caress. And I'm sure Francois would agree." Ray |
