A big thank
Tapio Savolainen, the Jury President
2003-09-03

Dear Jacek, I know I am a bit late to write my thanks to you, but it is never too late. From the very beginning of the exceptionally short bidding process I knew that Leszno will be the best choice. One of the reasons for the feeling was the funny incident in Warsaw two years ago. I was en-route down to South Africa in a Stemme and was missing a Polish map. I had spent q...

Leszno Impressions
Janet Hider Smith
2003-09-02

Sitting back here in a cold Melbourne winter (well, 12 degrees+), Leszno and the world championships really seem like another world. To think that only a few weeks ago, I was part of a group of several hundred people, each dedicated to the role they were contributing to make the worlds the huge success they were. It was a great example of people power, with a determination f...

'Yes that is possible'
Gerry Ellis, Irish Team Captain

I have been to a number of EGC and WGC events and I wish to thank Leszno for not only doing the event at short notice but having a great can do attitude. Now I do not walk too well and ther were guards in the camp site. I wished to visit the Sauna tent. We tell the guards I would like to go in tonight and I will leave. There was no problem. I met up with the stewards and Fi...

Just a line to say thanks for all your help. The flying was great, the company was great and the organization was the best I have ever come across. Leszno will stay in my memory for a very lon...

I can't give you a brilliant report about my stay in Leszno. As usual, if you are successful in a competition it was all very smooth and unspectacular. To stay in "Zamek Rydzyna" helped to find some distance to the almost daily flying with its quiet surrounding, historic atmosphere and it's 12km to the airfield. What I would like to mention is that I always felt an emotional...

I have been to about 15 World Championships, and I believe, it was in the best 2 or 3 that I have seen, Particually, with the large number of entries of 128 gliders, it was well organised. The launching was excellent, the briefings were kept short, and all staff were always ready to help with any queries. The International Huts were handy, particually, with the 2 nice blondes...

Andrej 'PM' Kolar, Std class

Here's a story that kept me and Aleš, my crew, amused for a day. The middle weekend of the competition saw me land out on two consecutive days. It was on Sunday, right in the middle of the Grand Prix in Hockenheim when I reported my second set of coordinates to Aleš. I laid under the PM's wing and slept in the shade. Occasionally waking up to observe the beautiful cumulus a...

First visit to Leszno
Andy Davis, Std class World Champion
2003-08-18

It was our first visit to Leszno and we will look back on the competition with memories of the friendly people, a good organisation and LOTS of flying - over 65 hours during the 12 days. It was quite tiring but good fun and the long tasks were both challenging and very enjoyable. And what a strange coincidence that the street number of our house in Leszno was also "80" !! ...

Dear Jacek, It is difficult for me to express my feelings after having spent those few hectic and marvelous days in Leszno! My thanks on behalf of IGC to yourself and your efficient staff for a fantastic effort - I wish that all WGCs were organised as these were! Please convey my gratitude to your helpful volunteers! Also my personal thanks to all of you who made my st...

To the Competition Director, Capt. Jacek Dankowski. Dear Jacek, take my sincerest congratulations for organizing and leading this World Championship, and achieving such a big success. I received many comments during the past two weeks after having the chance to visit the venue personally for the start of the big event. The comment of all those who took part or visited this W...

WGC 2003 Leszno’s impressions.
Mikolaj Centka
2003-08-17

I believe these have been the best organized championships I had ever a chance to observe. Moreover, a lot of effort have been put to make gliding attractive to people not familiar with it. The web site could serve as a brilliant example. It was live, managed in perfect English, full of emotions, with extraordinary features. Just to name some: >> On-line results input. Wha...

Tiring competition
Yves Jeanmotte, Std class
2003-08-17

I do not have a lot to write about this competition because of the lack of time we had to do anything else except rigging-ballasting-gridding-flying-heating-sleeping and all over again. It has been one of the most tiring competition I ever did. The task setter was really a nightmare for the pilots as the task where always at the max and even if they where smaller we had to spen...

Prepare yourself for the captions and lots of laughter. But before I present you with the captions, let me tell you how it all started. Sarmed Mirza used to show us (Ania and me) the photos he had taken. I asked him once if we could use him as another source of the photos on the webpage. He agreed. And one day - what was among the photos that he brought me? Try to guess. Bin...

Leszno Impressions
John Coutts, 15m class World Champion
2003-08-15

I will remember the competition most of all for the number of competition days, the sizes of the tasks, and the number of hours we flew. I ended up flying something like 70 hours over the 12 tasks and I am sure that many others - especially in the open class did considerabley more flying than that! Although the tasks where always reasonably long, I think that everyone enjoyed...

A story of a certain website...
Ania Witek-Crabb
2003-08-15

It all started off some time in December 2002 with an unclear vision in my head, or maybe rather a wish at the time, to put up a good, professional website for the Worlds. It all ended up with what you have all seen, and a gang of people involved in the project, with a joint wish to make things happen. The website’s popularity surpassed all our expectations and at some po...

Team-flying storks
Ake Pettersson, Open class
2003-08-14

I have an experience from the practice flying: Sometimes I saw formations of storks thermalling. Suddenly one stork would leave the formation to search for lift. If he found good lift, the formation joined him. If he got into sink, the formation waited for him while he returned by lots of wing-flapping. Perhaps they had learned of team-flying fro...

Am I an owl?
Sarmed Mirza
2003-08-07

Not really, then why do I want to fly at night? I was asking myself this last night when I came to the reception to be escorted to the airfield at about 21:30 hours to be whisked away over Leszno in a Bocian! I had read about this night glider flying phenomenon in UK in the Sailplane and Gliding magazine recently. Night rating, what is that and why does it exist, I wondered....
