Central Gliding School in Leszno - new website!

The Central Gliding School
The story of the Central Gliding School begins in 1936, when the School of Gliding of the Railway Workers Gliding Club from Poznan was established in Rzadkow near Chodziez. Operations continued, with a break during the war, until 1952. Then the School was moved to Leszno.
Right from the start the School was a place where many sporting events took place. As early as in 1953, the first Polish National Championships were organized here. Leszno organised national and international events every year. Twice (1958 and 1968) the World Gliding Championships were held here. Twice (in 1973 and 1975) the FAI International Women's Gliding Championships were here, too. In 1990 and 1998 the European Gliding Championships, in 1995 the Junior European Gliding Championships, in 1999 the 11th Women's European Gliding Championships and the 2nd World Championships in the World Class took place in Leszno. Both 1993 and 1994 saw the British Gliding Association National Championships in here too.
In the course of its long history the Centre has helped thousands of pilots not only from Poland, but from all over the world, to improve and extend their skills. During the training sessions here numerous events in other air sports disciplines have also taken place, including the World Aero-Modelling Championships, and the European Hot-Air Ballooning Championships.
Characteristics of the Central Gliding School
One of the most favourable gliding sites in the world, the Centre covers an obstruction-free area of 120 hectares at an elevation of 95m AMSL, some 3 km from the town of Leszno, offering very safe flying. The area surrounding Leszno is lowland characterised by an abundance of forestry and lakes to the west and south, as well as intensely cultivated, rich agricultural land to the east and north. The particular formation of the terrain on the one hand gives rise to extremely good meteorological gliding conditions, and on the other hand, should the weather deteriorate, gives plentiful opportunities for safe outlanding with straightforward retrieves. It often happens that in the course of a 14-day contest, 12 days will be favourable. During the gliding season, there can often be days when the thermals last for up to 12 hours. Thanks to this, it is quite possible to carry out long cross-country flights, and even achieve 1000 km and more. Since there are no airports in the vicinity with heavy traffic, it is possible to fly in any direction from Leszno without much hindrance.
